Intelligent hybridization

ENGIRO is very pleased to announce the successful test operation of a new type of hybrid drive using the most powerful version of its 260W electric engine.

Hybridization solutions with a low-emission diesel engine for the long-range operation and additional e-drives for local mobility are already widely used. Also known in this context are parallel hybrid drives, which have an e-motor integrated between the diesel engine and the gearbox.

As part of the HybridRail research project, the Institute MSE of RWTH Aachen University developed an innovative superimposed gearbox that completely replaces the conventional gearbox. On the one hand, together with its two electric motors the intelligent design of the gearbox realizes a continuously variable transmission ratio allowing the diesel engine to always be operated at its design point. On the other hand, instead of being used as actuators, the e-motors can also be combined for the purpose of a purely electric drive and therefore completely substitute the diesel engine. This type of hybrid drive reduces fuel consumption and emissions by more than 25%.
