Competencies: Simulation and calculation

One important method in designing ultra-efficient machines for electric drives is the numeric calculation of magnetic fields. The finite element method (FEM) is applied in the theoretical stage to model how the magnetic fields are formed and to calculate how magnets and coils need to be arranged given specific parameters so as to align the magnetic fields to obtain optimum torque. We perform these FEM calculations using the software tools ANSYS and Infolytica.

Simulation calculations are also used to model operating strategies. Here, all logical relationships are tested, in order to simulate energy management in particular. We use the software Matlab Simulink for these calculations.

Mechanical calculations are also essential on account of the high torques, as are thermal calculations for temperature control and cooling of the electric motor and power electronics.
